Getting back to the fold

22nd February 2015 was the momentous day I return to the fold of my fellow practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism. I had never left the fold; it was just that the pressures of corporate life and a clutch of other considerations kept me away from organisational matters. I always remained a practitioner at home. A decade or more did not seem to matter as I reconnected with my comrades in faith.
Here is a piece I wrote in my book, “Celebrating Active Ageing,” on what Nichiren Buddhism has meant to me.
Buddhism is a life philosophy that is very appealing. It respects the dignity of life, is compassionate towards others and seeks peace and harmony. Chanting and reciting certain portions of the Lotus Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha’s penultimate teaching, forms the prayer which we perform every morning and evening. Prayer helps in self-reflection and understanding the spiritual nature of ourselves and our environment so that we can become better individuals. We chant at times for long hours when confronted with personal difficulties of any kind; sometimes with fellow members who are always ready to support each other. We share a strong bond with fellow members and reach out to encourage each other whenever necessary.
Our prayers are not one of supplication seeking external intervention. We pray instead for the wisdom and courage to face up to our challenges and overcome them. We believe that the universal power lies within us, and we can tap this power through prayer.
We learn to break free from the narrow concerns of our smaller self and empathise with the difficulties of others. We encourage and support them as best as we can through prayers and visits to give them courage and hope. Sincere prayers for the welfare of others have a mystical way of bringing benefit to those whom we pray for.
I have gained from the practice of Nichiren Buddhism over the last two decades. It has given me a life philosophy, a large support group of fellow practitioners and above all a sense of purpose in life.
