My dedication to cancer care

Dear Friends,

I have decided to dedicate my participation in the Desert 500 Ultra cycling event in Rajasthan on 26th/27th February 2016 towards cancer care and treatment of needy patients.

I will be participating in the 250 kms challenge as the oldest participant by far at the age of 67 years. I decided to dedicate this effort to cancer care and treatment as my family has suffered greatly from this disease. My mother, sister and four brothers have all succumbed to cancer.

You can read about Desert 500 at

I am very happy to be associated with the Indian Cancer Society one of the oldest and largest NGOs dedicated to cancer care and treatment in the country.

I give below some relevant activities of the Indian Cancer Society. You can read about the full range of their activities at

Cancer treatment and cure initiatives of Indian Cancer Society

Indian Cancer Society (ICS) was established in 1951 by Dr. D.J. Jussawalla and Mr. Naval Tata as India’s first voluntary, non-profit, National Organization for Awareness, Detection, Cure and Survivorship of those affected with this disease.

Dr Arun Kurkure Initiation and Treatment Fund

In the last 3 years, ICS has helped 1942 patients by assisting them initiate diagnosis and cover part of their treatment costs and has spent nearly Rs 2 crores through this fund in the last 3 years.

The Indian Cancer Society – Cancer Cure Fund is a flagship project of ICS which provides financial aid for treatment to needy cancer patients. Cancer is curable, if detected early and treated in time. However, most patients in India with cancer are not able to afford the treatment costs and therefore do not survive this disease. This project provides financial aid up to Rs. 4 lakhs per patient to a needy cancer patient to undergo treatment and emerge a victor. This project has transformed the lives of over 900 needy cancer patients across the country, many of whom have completed their treatment and returned to productive life once again. ICS has implemented this at a pan India level covering over 20 states and 80% of the beneficiaries are less than 30 years of age.

In December 2009, Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), in a magnanimous gesture, offered to assist Indian Cancer Society in its efforts of providing financial aid to underprivileged cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital & the Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for children.

Under this project, Indian Cancer Society along with SRTT, funds part or the entire treatment cost of 7 cancer patients each month, both children and adults. The patients’ applications are thoroughly scrutinized by Indian Cancer Society’s medical social workers in accordance with the strict guidelines laid down by SRTT & then send them to SRTT for evaluation & acceptance.

UGAM is a voluntary support group which has been formed by Childhood Cancer Survivors from the After Completion of Therapy (ACT) clinic of Tata Memorial Hospital, inspired by the survivors from across the globe with whom they interacted during the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP) meeting in October 2007. Ugam was formally launched on 7th June 2009, first Sunday of June celebrated as Cancer Survivors Day across the world.

UGAM means “To Rise“, underscoring the determination of childhood cancer survivors, to rise above all obstacles in life & be VICTORS. The dream of such a support group was seen by a childhood cancer survivor, Shobhit Kaushal, who was a budding & very talented painter-poet who unfortunately was overpowered by his disease .UGAM is the youngest unit of the oldest and most prominent NGO, Indian Cancer Society (ICS) under its survivorship programme.
